Nicky Cruz’s powerful story of redemption, salvation and transformation is a powerful testament to the glorious transformative power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. A vicious fighter, criminal, drug user, drunkard and thief he was the leader of one of New York City’s most violent gangs, the Mau Mau. But all that changed when he met David Wilkerson, author of The Cross and the Switchblade, who refused to give up on Nicky Cruz. When he finally met Jesus and accepted Him as his Savior, Nicky Cruz left his violent life and gang to start a ministry that impacts young people today. His story proves that anyone can be reached with the gospel of Christ.

“The story of Nicky Cruz is remarkable. It has all the elements of tragedy, violence and intrigue – plus the greatest of all ingredients: the power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.” – Billy Graham

I first read this book in 1974 when I was a young teen. It was my favorite book for years and I read it over and over. It was surely a seed planted that was watered over the years. It gave me an understanding of the grace and forgiveness of God through Christ, yet I was not ready to make the commitment to surrender to Christ at that time. It wasn’t until 1990 when I chose to follow Him and commit my life to His service. In 1992 I began full-time ministry work with an organization that serves prisoners and in 1997 God called me to serve on staff for a ministry whose mission it is to see Jesus Christ transform the lives of juvenile offenders. Today, I still serve in this calling. Nicky’s testimony through Run Baby Run, I believe was crucial in my journey to know and serve Christ. We have plans to start book discussion groups in juvenile lockup facilities in my state. Thank you Nicky and all who serve with you in this ministry! Laura

I still keep the first copy I bought in USA. This book is Holy Spirit Power. I wish I could get many of them to distribut in jails and Drug Recovery Centers. The book is a power proof that GOD’s LOVE changes lives.

I read this when I was about 18 or so and I am 46 now, it is the only book I can say I have ever read. I hate reading and somebody gave it to me and said to read it and I didn’t know what it was about but I hated reading so bad, I said you need to keep it because I hate to read. But I took it anyways, then in a few days, I picked it up just to read a paragraph or 2 and I couldn’t put it down until I have read it all. This was back in 1990. It was the original version and I do like it somewhat better but it maybe because it was the first version I read. Now I didn’t get saved until 1994. But I am buying this book today to give it to another person to read . God bless you and your ministry. Oh so now the only book I read is the Bible.

The 1978 version still sits on my shelf, its pages faded, but now that I am grandmother to a troubled 15-year-old, Nicky Cruz’s testimonial calls out to me again. There is a definitive scene in the book where Nicky follows a balloon through the streets of New York City, praying that the balloon would at least make an escape. Tears rolled at the very thought of another balloon that made a heist from my ten-year-old hands while at the Bronx Zoo, but this juxtaposition gave me hope for Nicky (in the story) that he, too, would escape the clutches that kept him from soaring to better places. I’m thankful to the Lord for Nicky Cruz’s testimony, and I hope his story resonates with my grandchildren. Just purchased a fresh copy for this next generation.

I have enjoyed this book since I was a troubled teen in the 70`s. Through the message of God, and my mothers prayers it kept me from going the wrong way. I have read it so many times that I have worn out two copies. I had the joy of meeting Nicky once, and it was a joy to see that he lives what he preaches in his book. I wonder at times about some of those 5hat he talks about in his book and how are they today.

The power of our testimony is a weapon. It is a weapon against the lies of darkness that seek to hold us captive in a web of deceit. This testimony, that belongs to Nicky Cruz, was instrumental in my teens (in the 70’s) to secure me in the FATHER’S steadfast love! The god of this world seeks to capture us, drag us into the deep then consume us…but….GOD breaks us free. Nicky’s testimony is hard hitting and powerful and will stay with you for your lifetime.

The impact of this book that I read as a teenager many years ago never ceases to amaze me. Nicky’s story tells how JESUS led him from a life of hatred and horror into a life of rejoicing and redemption by the power of the Holy Spirit through the obedience of a very brave skinny preacher from PA, David Wilkerson.
Every teenager should be given this book to read. Every Christian should read this story.
I will never cease to remember Nicky’s story or share his story with a joy filled heart. I love reading about how Nicky Cruz became a Child of God through Jesus. I have often related his story to people when applicable to the situation or just to share about the power of Holy Spirit and how God can mightily use just one man who trusts and obeys God. I never tire of sharing the part when Jesus got a hold of Nicky.
Nicky’s story is particularly meaningful to me because my father is Puerto Rican. My parents lived in the Fort Greene area in 1958 during the very same months that David Wilkerson first walked the streets of New York and then proceeded to minister to the gangs. Just a few months before I was born in 1958, Nicky was changed by the power of God’s Holy Spirit. It may be silly, but it makes me feel connected to him. I can never share his story without a smile on my face and joy in my heart. I love how God changed this man. If a man like Nicky was can be changed by the power of God, nobody is beyond the reach of the power of God. 🤗
